چکیده

Two different multivariate clustering techniques, the K-means partitioning method and the Dirichlet process of mixture modeling, have been applied to the BATSE Gamma-ray burst (GRB) catalog, to obtain the optimum number of coherent groups. In the standard paradigm, GRB are classified in only two groups, the long and short bursts. However, for both the clustering techniques, the optimal number of classes was found to be three, a result which is consistent with previous statistical analysis. In this classification, the long bursts are further divided into two groups which are primarily differentiated by their total fluence and duration and hence are named low and high fluence GRB. Analysis of GRB with known red-shifts and spectral parameters suggests that low fluence GRB have nearly constant isotropic energy output of 1052 ergs while for the high fluence ones, the energy output ranges from 1052 to 1054 ergs. It is speculated that the three kinds of GRB reflect three different origins which may be mergers of neutron star systems, white dwarf with neutron stars and collapse of massive stars. Three types of gamma ray bursts

A multivariate analysis of gamma-ray burst (GRB) bulk properties is presented to discriminate between distinct classes of GRBs. Several variables representing burst duration, fluence and spectral hardness are considered. Two multivariate clustering procedures are used on a sample of 797 bursts from the Third BATSE Catalog: a nonparametric average linkage hierarchical agglomerative clustering pr...

Class of Gamma Ray Bursts?

Two classes of Gamma Ray Bursts have been identified so far, characterized by T90 durations shorter and longer than approximately 2 seconds. We show here that the BATSE 3B data allow a good fit with three Gaussian distributions in log T90. The χ statistic indicates a 40 % probability for two Gaussians, whereas the three-Gaussian fit probability is 98 %. Using another statistical method, it is a...

Evidence for the Galactic Origin of Gamma-ray Bursts

We propose a new criterion to divide the classical gamma-ray bursts into two classes on the basis of their distribution in the duration-hardness plane. We study the two proposed classes separately, dividing them into subsets of different hardness-ratio ranges. The intensity distribution (log N vs. log S) and the corresponding space distribution of the subsets provide us with a different scenari...

X-ray Transients from X-ray Binaries to Gamma Ray Bursts

We discuss three classes of x-ray transients to highlight three new types of transients found with the Wide Field Cameras onboard BeppoSAX. First there are the transients related to Low Mass X-ray Binaries in outburst, typically lasting weeks to months and reaching luminosities of the Eddington limit for a few solar masses. Recently another subclass of outbursts in such binaries has been discov...

Evidence for Two Distinct Morphological Classes of Gamma-ray Bursts from Their Short Timescale Variability

We have analyzed the 241 bursts for which peak counts (C)max exist in the publicly available Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) catalog. Introducing peak counts in 1024 ms as a measure of burst brightness B and the ratio of peak counts in 64 and 1024 ms as a measure of short timescale variability V , we find a statistically significant correlation between the brightness and the short...
